Joey Hadley

Joey Hadley, our head Boxing instructor, has been involved in the sweet science since the age of 13. Most people in Memphis, TN know Joey Hadley from his traffic reports on local radio and television over the last 25 years or as a Deputy Sheriff with the Shelby County sheriff's office for almost 30 years. Before Coach Hadley was a traffic reporter or Deputy Sheriff he was a very successful amateur and professional boxer.

Coach Hadley instructs a "Peek-a-Boo" style that was taught to him by the legendary Cus D'Amato. This is an aggressive style that concentrates on explosive punching power and avoiding your opponents attacks by slipping. There are very few trainers who coach this style since Cus passed away. Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney were among the last (both of whom taught Mike Tyson). Teddy, Kevin and Joey were all personally taught the "Peek-a-Boo" style by Cus.

Below is a list of Coach Hadley's competitive accomplishments:

  • 6 x Memphis and Mid-South Golden Gloves Champion
  • 3 x Southeastern AAU Boxing Champion
  • 1971 United States and North American Champion
  • In December 1973 knocked out World Champion Leon Spinks in the 1st round in Memphis, TN
  • Considered an outstanding prospect for the US Olympic Boxing team
  • Record of 122 - 18 as an amateur (93 by KO)
  • Turned Professional in 1974. Moved to upstate NY and lived and trained with Cus D'Amato who was the trainer of World Champions Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres & "Iron" Mike Tyson. As a pro Coach Hadley had 6 fights winning them all by KO but was unfortunately forced to retire due to a severe eye infection.
Coach Hadley is available Monday - Friday from 2 PM - 8:30 PM and on Saturday from 12 PM - 4 PM. Coach offers training to Men, Women, Teens and Children looking to get into shape, learn self-defense or for those seeking to become a competitive champion.
