Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Considered the premier ground fighting and self-defense art in the world, BJJ emphasizes positional ground control, escapes from positions of disadvantage, and a variety of submission holds such as chokes, arm locks and leglocks. No martial artist today can consider himself or herself a well rounded practitioner without learning BJJ.
The 2000 year old art of Jiu-Jitsu, which began in India, was adopted by Japan, and exported to Brazil in the mid-1920′s where the techniques of this ancient art were modified by the Gracie family to reflect more modern self defense situations. GBJJ gained popularity throughout the U.S. and around the world when, in the early 1990′s, Royce Gracie defeated practitioners of many other martial arts, many of whom outweighed Gracie by 60+ lbs., in a “no holds barred” setting. From his historic victories, the martial arts have evolved more than any other time in history.
